I am so glad to have made an impact that makes you think more about what to consume. 'Happy chickens,' that is something that I would say. Thanks for reading! You are awesome!

Re: Make a Difference While Making Dinner

Great post! I am all about organic eats for ethical, environmental, and my own personal health reasons. We are what we eat! I think it's so important to understand where the food that we enjoy comes from and the negative effects, both cost and nutrient wise, of long-distance transportation in our food systems. Miriam, I remember back in my ole college days we went to Trader Joe's and were going to buy eggs. You looked at me and said, "would you rather eat happy chickens or sad chickens?" That question has stayed with me for years and years each time I'm at the market. I may not have fully understood it at the time (this was several years ago before I ever took an interest in nutrition or food politics) but now I always always always buy the happiest, most locally sourced, and most environmentally friendly version of every organic product, so thank you! I love your blog, you two are so awesome! I can't wait to read more posts. I absolutely love how you focus on all the beauty that this life has to offer us.

Re: About

Dear Denise,
Thanks for reading. We love spending time with clever and inspiring people like you. I think you are very good at having an awareness of your footprint on this Earth. I love that you collect your own water, grow your own food and recycle and reuse everything you can. So thank you for that! We have a lot to learn from each other (and the birds).
If you feel inspired to share your own green memes with the world, please write your little heart out and take some pictures, then send them to me or Aina so that we can post them.
Much love,
Miriam

Re: About

Dear Miriam and Aina, Doug and I are enjoying your blog this morning. It is creative, informative and inspiring. When we spend time with you we learn and grow. We have much to learn and you are gentle teachers. As you know, Doug is home caring and healing his broken ankle. We will read your blog, increase our awareness, align or actions and sprout a greener life.

I am aware, that you both are rolling your eyes as you read this. Good God we have foil in our drawer. Miriam it is the last roll we will ever buy...ok, I won't buy another one unless I call you first and promise to listen green wisdom.

loveandpeace,
denise

Re: Organizations

Very informative article. I absolutely love studying subsistence strategies, and hope to live as sustainably as possible. Lately I have been traveling around the world, figuring out how I can possibly have a positive impact on this wonderful world.
My next adventure is heading to Nicaragua to volunteer at a development project for three months. I don't know how often I will have access to internet, but feel free to write me any questions you have about anything and about what your interests are.
Have a nice day,
Miriam

Re: Farming with Clowns in Croatia

HI,

Its really very interesting article guys.

nice work guys.

Thanks

Re: Sew a Zipper to Reduce and Reuse

Bekah! I agree with your thoughts!

It takes a tad more planning to think about timing, bus routes, bike routes, etc., but it's so worth it. No need to worry about paying for parking or tickets, just jump off the bus or lock up the bike, and breathe a deep sigh of fresh air.

Re: Mmmmmm… Tastes Like Sunshine

I attended this same session in SLO. This system seems very efficient, especially for our (generally) sunny town. The energy savings appeals for sure but even more exciting is the enhanced flavors possible through cooking with the sun oven.

Re: Mmmmmm… Tastes Like Sunshine

I can't wait to try this out! Here is a recipe for wheat bread we should try out :)

Solar Oven Wheat Bread Recipe:

Ingredients:
4 cups of warm water

2 Tbsp of yeast

½ tbsp of sugar

1 tbsp Salt

1/3 cup of olive oil or canola oil

1/3 cup of honey

11/2 tbsp of dough enhancer

½ cup of wheat gluten

9 cups of wheat flour

2 cups of white flour

Steps:

Place solar oven outside to pre-heat. (This needs to be an oven with sufficient height (space) for bread loaves)
Grease or spray three dark (blackened) bread pans
In a large mixing bowl add warm water, sugar and yeast. (You can use a mixer or you can mix and knead by hand)
Add all the rest of the ingredients, except white flour, to the water-yeast mix.
Mix well on medium speed for about 5 minutes or knead by hand for about 12 minutes to allow the wheat gluten to set in.
As you mix the wheat flour mixture add the white flour as you mix or knead until the dough ceases to be wet or sticky.
(The white flour is used to lighten the weight and density of the bread loaf, but if you prefer all wheat flour, you can do so.)
Form the dough into three loaves and place inside greased pans and cover with towel to prevent drying of dough and to help retain warmth of dough.
Place in a warm location to help the dough rise more quickly. (I place mine near a sunny window)
Make sure that your solar oven temperature is at least 260° F, preferably 325-350°F(The temperature will drop initially after placing dough inside of oven, but will rise again and finish near its highest level)
When the dough is raised; quickly place all three pans in solar cooker if permissible.
If you do not have a solar cooker that is large enough, then place two in and leave the third one in the refrigerator in the meantime to retard the expansion of the yeast and dough.
Adjust solar oven towards sun.
Set timer at 60-75 minutes for one loaf and 75-80 minutes for two loaves
Result:

Bread should be light golden brown

source:
http://www.solarcooker-at-c...

Re: Contact

Haha! The little bamboo spork is so cute and is also sustainable. In addition, the bamboo that the spork is made from does not "clink" your teeth like a metal fork. Also if one does not like to put plastic (petroleum) in their mouth, could choose to use this cute, functional, reusable bamboo spork for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Re: Reshape your Footprint with Informed Action

I agree! we can do it!
